Well this is something I have been wanting to do for a while. Just a simple vector image with sharp, thick lines and vibrant colors. Figured out how to do some interesting space stuff like an eclipse and glowing orb and stuff.
So this is Bemular. The first; the one that started it all! The original Ultra kaiju. His subtitle is “The Space Monster”. A subtitle that will be used for dozens of other monsters throughout the years in the Ultraman universe. This tiny armed saurian is an intergalactic criminal. His crimes……..stepping on hospitals and orphanages! Actually I do not know, and they never really tell you why Ultraman pursued him to Earth. But look at the ugly mug, it had to be something downright diabolically evil! Doctor Insano evil.
As I said, he is a criminal, and fled to earth in order to evade capture. He arrived in his ship…….which is just a blue orb. He hid in a lake in Japan. Unfortunately he did this in front of a few dozen or so Earthlings, so they went and ratted him out to the Science Patrol. They investigated the lake and found the monster. They attacked him with their planes and submarines, driving the monster out of the water. All seemed lost for the humans though, when all of a sudden Hayata transformed into the hero of light Ultraman. (Ultraman was chasing the monster Bemular on Earth, but his red orb ship crashed into Hayata. The accident killed the human. Ultraman, grief stricken, gave his life to save the humans. Together they share the same life-force, allowing Ultraman to exist on planet Earth. Only for three minutes at a time though when he is transformed. Something about the whole Earth’s sun can’t power him and blah blah blah. Honestly, it’s the same stick they say in every Ultra series. LEARN IT FOLKS!
“If every the timer should run out, it shall mean that Ultraman will never rise again!” *he says in his best voice over work*
So Ultraman beats the monster hands down and blows him up with his Specium beam. Big shocker
Bemular for me, set a precedent for the whole series. The monsters were going to be interesting and sometimes wild in their designs. Weird, but effective. Looking at the monster now, I really do appreciate the effort they put forth. He is not the greatest monster of the series, nor hardly even remembered all the well. I mean it was nearly 45 years since he saw a screen again when they revamped him for Ultra Galaxy the Movie. I mean it is hard to stage a fight around him with those tiny T-Rex arms. Still, he is a pretty neat design. The tiny arms. The bulging lifeless eyes. The blue Godzilla breath he can spit from his mouth. And the hideous monstrous face! All in all, they were great ideas that got combined into a really memorable monster for me. And I just wanted to do something to really just say hey, this it he dude that started it all! Gave him his orb ship, a nice space backdrop, and a eclipsing planet.
I do not know how many of these I will do, but I would like to at least get a couple more done inbetween my other ongoing projects. And not just the first Ultra monsters. But stuff like Space Giant, Giant Robo, and Spectreman. Guess I got a little inspired by The Kaiju Protraits
. A wonderful art series done by a good friend and immensely talented artist, Raf Gonzalez. Or as some of you might better know him, Enshohma
If you get a chance, I really urge you to check out his stuff out. It’s not just Godzilla. It’s not just Ultraman. It’s pretty much everything kaiju. Monsters of all shapes and sizes. From every walk of life. He is a cool dude that knows his stuff when it comes to the rubber suit kaijus we all know and love.
So, hopefully this early morning post of art will brighten up a few people’s days and give them that kaiju fix they needed haha
Now I got to pop off to work before I'm late. But enjoy and have fun. Stay safe and as always, enjoy the week, don’t fight it
