Cykor - The Undying Kaiju by earthbaragon Cykor - The Undying Kaiju by earthbaragon
Boy this one took me a while. This is the monster Cykor. A villain kaiju from the Yongary film that was made in 1999. :iconrixshaw: wanted this. Now I got to admit when he asked for it, my gut just cringed. This is far from a popular kaiju, and there is next to nothing of images of him to use for reference shots. Had to really just freeze frame the movie a lot and try to make out some details on the horrible CGI that is used to bring the monster to life. All in all though I am glad he asked for it cause I don’t think the piece really turned out all that bad.

Cykor as I said is the villain monster from the film. He is sent by aliens at the last minute, to fight the newly freed Yongary. His design is ok, but really is something that a 10 year old would come up with. He is a quadruped monster with an odd tail, two crab claw arms and a strange reptile like head. He can shoot energy out of his tail and he can jump huge distances. He can shoot fireballs from his maw that are highly explosive. Also, if he losses his arms or even his head….he can sprout tentacles to attack his opponent. These also can electrocute a fighter. Even with no head he can fight. Hence why I used the title of Cykor the Undying for this. During the whole fight, the horrible American actors in the film are forced to read off really bad dialogue about the monster’s strange immortality. Such classics as “Won’t the damn thing just die”, and so forth. I wanted to show off this ability by taking away one of his crab claw arms and have the tentacles in place of it. I also put in a handful of the alien ships with him. Rixshaw did win the contest, so I wanted to do something extra for his and make it a more comprehensive composition. Everything is made completely from scratch, with the exception of the texture of the planet that Cykor is standing on. That is a texture of the moon that was found on NASA's website. Learned a couple of new ways to make planets though that will come in handy down the road :)

Well, I hope he likes it and everyone else does. Once again though popularity of the monster is probably going to make this a pretty dull fav for people. It did take much longer than I thought it would. Time for bed though. Night people, and have a great weekend :)

wait you mean the 1999 movie reptillian? (which of course was going to be called yongary)

The only thing I didn't like about his design was the head (though your version is leagues beyond the original). I would've liked him better if they gave him a more crustacean-like face.

My take on the movie itself... I... kinda... liked it. *Hides in bomb shelter* Don't get me wrong; its a BAD movie, but it has a certain appeal to it. And considering how rare giant monster movies have been in more recent times, you gotta take what you can get.

Thankx :) I tried to base all the detail of the skin and spikes off that shot of the latex head that was blown off and laying in the street. I actually do no hate the movie at all and actually enjoy it. It's just that so bad it is good territory. And I understand about be glad and take what you can get with films. Can't believe there are kaiju fans that are still bitching about how anime and unoriginal Pacific Rim was. Yes, because the Godzilla series has spoiled all our tastes with none steriotypical characters and deep Oscar wining scripts right?

I honestly loved Pacific Rim. Were there things to nitpick about? Yes: the main character was a tad dull (but thats typically a given with kaiju movies), the whole anti-kaiju wall thing is ignored after the first 30 minutes, and the driving force behind the kaiju invasion was too downplayed. But again, just nitpicks, nothing really major (MAYBE the last one). PR was the first kaiju-themed movie I've ever seen in theaters, and I thought it was an absolute blast.

Great job!

Cykor was easily the best part of that movie, I've forgotten nearly everything about it except him.

Very true. The whole film just kinda go through the motions when it comes to story telling. :)

One thing I really like about your work is you draw a lot of kaiju that are usually skipped over- Even the ones you dislike, you give them the same attention to detail that you do for the rest. That counts for a lot, and it helps you grow as an artist too.

I try to. I really think my drawing skills really lack a whole lot. I just make up for it with color and compositions on the subject matter.
