It’s another Toho kaiju with a girl. Like I haven’t done that before ha. Well, I will try to keep this short. Just not feeling all that well. Blah mood. But I put a lot of time in this illustration and particularly like how it came out.
This is the Godzilla Toho monster Manda. More specifically the Final Wars Manda. The serpent was first introduced in the 60’s film call “Atragon“ It’s an ok scifi film, but to me it is really boring in parts. Hardy Toho’s best foot forward. Manda shows up near the end of the film to fight the title super submarine and gets beat pretty easy. The design of the monster is ok. It is influenced by the ancient oriental dragon design. Long horns, whiskers, and what not.
Manda would not show up again till “Destroy All Monsters“ The suit….or rather prop, got stripped down to the bones. No more flanking horns on the head, no more hair or whiskers on the face and body. It is more just a really long snake with tiny feet and arms. Again, this is not a horrible look. I actually prefer that one over the original incarnation of the monster. He gets some city destruction scenes but that is pretty much it.
The giant serpent would not see the light of day again until 2004’s “Godzilla Final Wars“ . And no, I am not counting the stock footage of Manda in Godzilla’s Revenge as an appearance. Godzilla Final Wars got the monster right for me. The redesign is the best of the revamped monsters in the film. It is more organic and based upon actual animals. You can look at it and go………..yeah I believe that might actually exist. He had a fin that runs on both sides of the monster’s entire body length. It helps it move along in the water by acting as an odd paddle. Sea snakes have a similar like ability. They do not have fins, but they can flatten out there body, causing them to have more of a flat surface area. By moving back and forth, they are able to give themselves locomotion in the water. This Manda was given back the horns, which look great by the way. And one final tidbit they added to this incarnation of the dragon was the inclusion of these mile long tendrils that are located behind the monster’s legs and arms. I am not sure what purpose they have but they give the monster a most angelic and majestic like feel when it moves through the sea. Like silk cloth that is blowing from left to right as it drifts in the underwater currents. So, as you can see how I am gushing over this design, is why I chose to use it in this illustration.
The female in this is really my own interpretation of the Mu Princess. In the original film she had the red hair, but had a more light and sequenced like dress. I really did not like the design at all. In the animated 2 part OVA “Super Atragon“, she has a cape, headdress, and very power ranger like outfit. Again, it was ok, but used way too much white. I thought I would come up with my down design for the royal commander, using influences from both incarnations of the character.
The final thing I decided to add in this piece was a couple of famous submarines. The red one is the Gotengo, or the Atragon in the English dub. Personally I like the name Atragon way more. This is the ship that defeated the original Manda. The grey one is the Seaview. The famous scientific vessel (packed with nuclear warheads) from the hit show “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea“ I always loved this show and it was one of the first TV dvd series I got on dvd. I just did not think it would take them over 4 years to release all the seasons. Darn you FOX!. The last submarine, is from the television giant hero show “Fireman“ This is a show that is pretty much a Ultraman clone, just with a different story. The ship is shaped like a giant metal fish and is operated by the SAF (The Scientific Attack Force). It’s one of my favorite non Ultra shows, so I had to show off some of it.
Well………….that was a lot longer than I intended it to be, sorry for that. All in all I do like the layout and am happy with the overall look. I wish there was a different background but did not want to spend another week on figuring something out. Have to move on to the next project. Till next time. May you all have a great weekend. I going back to bed.
