Manda - Serpent God of the Mu Empire by earthbaragon Manda - Serpent God of the Mu Empire by earthbaragon
It’s another Toho kaiju with a girl. Like I haven’t done that before ha. Well, I will try to keep this short. Just not feeling all that well. Blah mood. But I put a lot of time in this illustration and particularly like how it came out.

This is the Godzilla Toho monster Manda. More specifically the Final Wars Manda. The serpent was first introduced in the 60’s film call “Atragon“ It’s an ok scifi film, but to me it is really boring in parts. Hardy Toho’s best foot forward. Manda shows up near the end of the film to fight the title super submarine and gets beat pretty easy. The design of the monster is ok. It is influenced by the ancient oriental dragon design. Long horns, whiskers, and what not.

Manda would not show up again till “Destroy All Monsters“ The suit….or rather prop, got stripped down to the bones. No more flanking horns on the head, no more hair or whiskers on the face and body. It is more just a really long snake with tiny feet and arms. Again, this is not a horrible look. I actually prefer that one over the original incarnation of the monster. He gets some city destruction scenes but that is pretty much it.

The giant serpent would not see the light of day again until 2004’s “Godzilla Final Wars“ . And no, I am not counting the stock footage of Manda in Godzilla’s Revenge as an appearance. Godzilla Final Wars got the monster right for me. The redesign is the best of the revamped monsters in the film. It is more organic and based upon actual animals. You can look at it and go………..yeah I believe that might actually exist. He had a fin that runs on both sides of the monster’s entire body length. It helps it move along in the water by acting as an odd paddle. Sea snakes have a similar like ability. They do not have fins, but they can flatten out there body, causing them to have more of a flat surface area. By moving back and forth, they are able to give themselves locomotion in the water. This Manda was given back the horns, which look great by the way. And one final tidbit they added to this incarnation of the dragon was the inclusion of these mile long tendrils that are located behind the monster’s legs and arms. I am not sure what purpose they have but they give the monster a most angelic and majestic like feel when it moves through the sea. Like silk cloth that is blowing from left to right as it drifts in the underwater currents. So, as you can see how I am gushing over this design, is why I chose to use it in this illustration.

The female in this is really my own interpretation of the Mu Princess. In the original film she had the red hair, but had a more light and sequenced like dress. I really did not like the design at all. In the animated 2 part OVA “Super Atragon“, she has a cape, headdress, and very power ranger like outfit. Again, it was ok, but used way too much white. I thought I would come up with my down design for the royal commander, using influences from both incarnations of the character.

The final thing I decided to add in this piece was a couple of famous submarines. The red one is the Gotengo, or the Atragon in the English dub. Personally I like the name Atragon way more. This is the ship that defeated the original Manda. The grey one is the Seaview. The famous scientific vessel (packed with nuclear warheads) from the hit show “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea“ I always loved this show and it was one of the first TV dvd series I got on dvd. I just did not think it would take them over 4 years to release all the seasons. Darn you FOX!. The last submarine, is from the television giant hero show “Fireman“ This is a show that is pretty much a Ultraman clone, just with a different story. The ship is shaped like a giant metal fish and is operated by the SAF (The Scientific Attack Force). It’s one of my favorite non Ultra shows, so I had to show off some of it.

Well………….that was a lot longer than I intended it to be, sorry for that. All in all I do like the layout and am happy with the overall look. I wish there was a different background but did not want to spend another week on figuring something out. Have to move on to the next project. Till next time. May you all have a great weekend. I going back to bed.

I owned the series, but then most of it got lost overseas. Who would win, in your opinion; Captain Crane or Captain Kirk?

Well Kirk could never lose a fight. He would lose his shirt all the time...but never a fight lol.

Thankx :) I really like how the Dragon turned out. It certainly does add a cool look to the image. I just wish I could draw people a bit better though :( Oh well. It's still one of my favorite character illustrations :)

I love this film, The Gotengo is awesome and so is the final wars version. Also wasn't their a 70's redesign of the Gotengo called the Ghoten or something like that? I don't remember what the film was called but it looked VERY cool!

Also, I'll be totally honest, the anime sucked ass to me at least. Could the characters be any fucking louder?!?!?! Do love the designs in that film though^.^

Also the Mu Princess you drew looks pretty!

I really enjoyed the anime really. It was just the awful dubbing my ADV that made it the overly loud thing it was. There is a 70's type of Gotengo like ship called the Goten. It's from a film called "The War in Space". It a pretty movie, effects wise, for Toho. Just a ripoff of Star Wars that all. That spaceship though the Goten would kill Godzilla. It's freaking drill can detach and shoot off. It has the power to destroy an entire planet! :)

There's also this movies called Super Fleet Sazer X (that type of Power Rangers-like stuff) where the Gotengo also makes an appearance.

Yep, I liked Justirisers and the first series. But man, that Sazer X series was bad. Which sort of sucks, cause that is the series that had the most money thrown behind it :(

I haven't watched it, as I already knew it was a Power Ranger-like stuff and I don't like that type of Tokusatsu. However, I only wanted to point it out the fact that the Gotengo appeared in it.

I respect you like the anime, I personally don't and yes most early anime dubbing was HILARIOUSLY bad (MD Geist, The first 90's Giant Robo dub amd pretty much the entire library of Omni Productions dubs of Godzilla, Transformers Headmasters, Masterforce and victory) and Macross: Clash of the Bionoids (Do you remember love dub) to name a few)

Really, Goten was from a Star Wars rip-off? Didn't know that. So if it has a launching drill, this would make The original and 2004 Gotengo look like a pussy eh?

Out of curiosity, which is your favorite incarnation of the Atragon/Gotengo? The old school version or the updated version from Final Wars? Or do ya like the anime version better than either of them?

I prefer the original one. It's simple and sleek. Especially when you see how nice it looked in the Sazer X series. (A power ranger type show that Toho did). I thought the updated one in Final Wars was nice though. The anime one was just bit too much. The blade were just too gigantic. Though out of all of them the anime one felt the most dangerous that is for sure.

Wasn't really going for a chibi look for the Gotengo. It's just I suck at trying machines in such a tiny scale :P

Love all the details you put into Final Wars Manda! That's my fave Manda design too, both visually as well as by virtue of the fact he fared much better against the Gotengo than his original counterpart.

I pretty much agree with your take on the original "Atragon" movie, it had a neat premise but was kinda dull, mostly because the Mu Empire came across as rather helpless at times despite their supposed advanced technology and how Manda appeared only briefly and was easily dispatched by the Gotengo ):

I liked how Destroy All Monsters Manda got to wreak more havoc and came across as more indestructible than the original, even if it lost its horns and hair lol

I love what ya did with the Empress, she looks beautiful and confident. Toho should bring her and the Mu Empire back someday for Godzilla film and beef up their tech and number of monsters >:3

Would be nice to see Toho go that route. I mean they were close with Mothra 2. How knows what Toho's next Godzilla film will be. Most likely it will have a Mothra or Ghidorah though *sigh*

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I love seeing old favorites, but seeing them back to back over and over again weakens their appeal, the return of King Ghidorah should be a special event, not "oh, him again." Same goes for Mothra, TIMES TEN, give the bug a break XD (seriously, she was all over the place in the Millennium series).

I think the Heisei era did a good job of mixing the new and the old together to honor Toho's heritage while also bringing in some new blood. Mothra and Battra, Moguera and Space Godzilla, etc

Heck, I'll be happy if they make a Godzilla Vs Rodan movie for a change of pace (which would be EPIC >8D ), or Varan.

Thankx. Even though he...or she....is not one of my favorite kaijus ever, I thought the Final Wars version really did the monster some justice. If only that could have rubbed off on poor Hedorah though........

Yeah, so true. Hedorah is NOT a kaiju you can kill with one shot. He is the strongest monster Goji faced in the Showa series. Ghidorah and MechaGodzilla were strong too, but he is frieking badass.
