British Monsters - Fiend Without A Face by earthbaragon British Monsters - Fiend Without A Face by earthbaragon
Urrrg. I could not get any kind of a background to work with this freaking thing. I tried but really this is all I could do. Hopefully it is not too painful to look at *sigh* :(

Ok, this is a British monster from the film called "Fiend Without a Face" It's certainly a very different type of film from the B movie days that is for sure. For something of that time it is pretty gruesome. The creatures are a result of a combination of nuclear energy and an experiment with telekinesis that a scientist is doing. The new lifeforms attack helpless people and remove their brains and spinal cords. Later, when they have fed upon the nuclear radiation, their bodies (which were invisible before) are beheld to be the mutated brains and spines of their victims! The creature multiply and continue to feed, terrorizing the countryside. Even though they can be killed with bullets or axes, there is just too many to defeat by hand. It wasn't until an Airforce pilot blew up the power plant, did the creatures meet their end. With no energy to feed on, they quickly died off.

I've always loved the simplistic design of these monsters. Just brains with spinal cords. They got feeler like arms to grasp things and little lollipops on top of their head. (I've read sources that say these are suppose to be eye stocks but there is no eyes there. It seems to be more like radar antenna to me). They strangle people with their tails and can turn invisible. Pretty horrifying to me! If you can, watch the movie. I was say buy the dvd, but that thing is just way too overpriced.

Next up, something that comes from a lake. And is in color!

A cut above the usual 50s SF (though I love it all).  I was freaked out by the guy who only had HALF his brain eaten, and then bursts into the town meeting shrieking and gibbering.

There are some really horrifying scenes in those older movies I will admit. One that sticks in my head is the opening scene in The Crawling Eye. When the one climber is decapitated by the aliens o_0

Any chance of some classic Doctor Who monsters like Drashigs and Sea Devils

I've never really watched a lot of Dr. Who, but I am familiar with the Sea Devils, mainly cause a guy by the name of Nash over at ThatGuywiththeglasses website would review random episodes of the classic series. That one seem to get me cause the cheesiness of the monsters and well everything else about the episodes. Might do it one day :)

I think my favorite thing about this movie is how surprisingly gory the climax is, especially by 1950's standards. Even James Rolfe was surprised that he was talking about a B-Movie where killer brains are smashed by an ax, and messily splut out guts.

Well I wouldn't say he is my favorite, but I do enjoy the hell out of the movie. Reminds me alot of Island of Terror. But those creatures in that film I think are way more dangerous than the invisible fiends :)

Okay, invisible leaping brain sucking Fiends or slow moving snail-like Terrors... Hmmmm, I think I would fear the Fiends more. As usual in movies, people do dumb things, and get killed easily because its...a movie. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE "Island of Terror", I do, but too many characters get killed much too easily in the film. Like HOW did that one get up in the tree, and why did they not see it before they stood right under the damned tree? Sorry! it's call peripheral vision...most people have it. Not buying it. I think both of these movies are a HELL of a lot more entertaining than most of the genre crap that we have to suffer today. If I had the choice of seeing "Fiend Without a Face" on TV, or seeing AVATAR in 3D at a good quality theater somewhere. I'd take the FIEND hands down.
I saw these films for the first time when i was a kid, and that is the best time to experience this sort of thing.

Ha ha... Best part of this flick was when they jumped on your head and dry humped the back of your neck. :D

Yeah, eye stalks would come from underneath the brain anyhow; I have a latex replica of a Fiend and it has severed stumps of optic nerves! The arms and upper "antennae" may be exaggerations of certain major nerves.

The weird thing is throughout the film they only ever talk about "the fiend" and "a fiend" even after they know there are lots of invisible brains around, it may be a single collective being.

I think the background has a nice B-movie quality, and I love the coloring and highlighting on this one :D

Mmmmph. Maybe I need to watch the movie again. It has been quiet a few years for that one. Thankx about the background. If i did it over again I think I would do waves for like wave lengths for brainwave patterns. Might have made a wee bit more sense. Oh well, maybe that is something I will use for the Crawling Eye one of these days.

I don't think you need to do it over at all, but another possibility could be a background of brain texture (a different color from the fiend of course)

They're no longer being made and are ultra tough to find, but for a while years back a Halloween prop company was selling life-sized, bendable latex fiends! I own one, should've gotten a second one when I had the chance...

Thankx. I'm still not sold on the background all that much though. Next piece will certainly be more mindful of the background that goes with the subject that is for sure.

I think the background works. I mean if I saw a big brain thingy, the world might start spinning.

one of my favorite b-movie monsters. Their little cameo in that one looney tunes movie (along with various other warner bros. movie monsters of that era) was a treat.

Yeah all those cameos in that Back In Action movie were nice. Shame the film bombed though :P I would have loved to have seen the Martian head in a orb from "Invaders From Mars" the original :P Ever time I watch that movie I just think that guy is Kazooo from The Flintstones!

yeah, but i'd rather have had just a movie about those guys running around. XD Who wouldn't want to see a movie where all these old school b-movie monsters got together??

They had the orb head from Invaders From Mars??? *doesn't remember* that whole scene is like one BIG easter egg hunt/who's who of the 50's and 60's.

Yeah, it was pretty horrifying. Almost as bloody as Caltiki The Immortal Monster. I heard a while back they were going to remake this film for this year. Whether that is a lie, or some god awful straight to dvd crap like Attack of the Giant Leeches was, remains to be seen.

really? I'll have to keep an eye on that one. Would be neat to see a remake. Like, Piranha 3D style; OVER THE TOP.

Thankx, though I am not all that happy with it. Not nearly as much as I was with my Robot Monster. My next one, Crater Lake Monster, should be alot better. I have that background planned out to a "T" And I am way more happy with his drawing too.

Extremely. Though not as freaky as Island of Terror. That sucking noise they do when they are sucking all the bones out of your body still gives me the willies!
